Katherine Hartwood was not her original name. She translated her original name from her native language, what Earthlings might call Swahili, as a symbol that she left her past behind with her world. Her mother named her Safi which means “Pure” because she was the first of her mother’s first litter to survive outside the womb. Her surname was given to her and her siblings because of her mother’s chosen destiny of gardening—Mayokumi, which means “Heart-wood.” She had two sisters and a brother. Her sisters names were Adhra, “Apology,” and Firdwasi, “Garden of Paradise.” Her brother’s was Ajali, “Destiny.” Kat’s mother, Amali, or “Hope,” had chosen her destiny in the cycle of life and energy to be a caretaker of her children and one of the gardeners of the pride. Her father, Kafil, or “Protector,” had chosen the destiny of a fighter for the military, specifically in the Navy. From the time Kat was a small cub, she knew that she wanted to be just like her father. She would ask him to train her when he could and Kat was not in school. She looked up to her father with great respect, but her father only reciprocated a feeling of trainer and teacher, rather than a father. When she was about 15 years old her sister went to a secret party with her lover and was killed by a jealous male that got into an argument with her sister’s lover. The death of her sister confirmed Kat’s desire to enforce justice in her world. When she was of age to enroll in boot camp for the Navy, she did. Even though Kat was engaged to a male chosen by her parents, she went to join the Navy to later marry her suitor. Kat was greatly ridiculed by her fellow recruits because she was a female pursuing a male destiny. The fact that she was constantly teased and bullied only made her want to be her best to show them wrong. What hurt Kat the most was that her main tormentor was her own brother, Ajali. He joined a group of strict believers of the cycle’s “true meaning” when he was young, being the only male of his family, and since turned against Kat’s wanting a masculine destiny. Kat just bottled her emotions up until one night after she and her fellow grunts graduated from boot camp there was a huge party thrown. Kat drank, danced, and had a wonderful time with her male and female friends that night, as few as she had. All of a sudden her brother started to talk about how his sister was a disgrace to their family. “She should be no sister of mine! She soils our family name with her impure choice of destiny. She should go feed a cub and be happy!” This sent Kat over the edge and she mercilessly attacked him. Everyone was too drunk, stoned, or shocked to realize that Kat and her brother were fighting until it was too late. Kat had a missing eye (later replaced with the blue cybernetic) and her brother was dead. Horrified, Kat left her homeworld out of shame. She didn’t tell anyone and left that night. She changed her name and began her life working for the Rahnian Sphere. She moved her way through the ranks until she got the closest thing to serving a military position she could: Political Officer to the princess. Through the years Kat accumulated many friends, lovers, enemies, and scars from her protecting the crew she was with at the time. She went from ship to ship, planet to planet to try to make diplomatic agreements with the inhabitants in the place of the princess. Kat is now assigned as an Ambassador to the Star Sisters on Tuteck, living with her wife, Lor’ea, husband, Robin, her husband’s boy, Bo’ab and is a mother to Kira, Galen, and Angelique and the mother of Enzi, Musa, Asani, Safiya, and Nyota.
